About 1931 the Cumberland Times-News reported the following:
Five squads of Company G, Maryland National Guard Unit here staged a sham battle on the fields and hills between this city and the Cumberland Country Club. These squads were commanded by Lieutenant Abraham W. Miller and Sergeants John C. Golden, Melvin Rice and F. Allan Weatherholt. The fight was a running battle in which a number of problems were successfully completed, ended at Meadow Brook Beach, where over 1,000 persons had gathered to witness the final battle and aerial attack. All through the fight local aviators, Ronald Landis, Chester Everline, and William Johnson, harassed the Company G troops by continued strafing and dropping of bombs composed of small sacks of flour. These pilots clearly demonstrated the value of aircraft in the event of war. The flyers then gave a demonstration of stunt flying. Following the exhibition the troops stacked their rifles and, in full uniform, went swimming in the Meadow Brook pool and then hiked back to the Armory here, arriving before dark.
