OTHER HEROES OF WW II

Kenny Jewell is one of the remembered heroes of World War II and is the one described above.  But he was only one of the many from the Cumberland area that participated in and accomplished heroic deeds.  An attempt could be made to list all the others that fall in the hero category would likely be an inadequate.  It is best not to undertake such a listing, as any attempt to do so would leave many to wonder – How about my uncle who did not return, or my father who was a prisoner of war, or my brother who came home without two limbs, or a cousin who was lost at sea, or my aunt who worked in a battlefield hospital, or any number of other situations.  While this manuscript deals primarily with aeronautical endeavors and aviation deeds, there is no attempt to slight the total effort of the other services during WW II.  Whether participating as an airman, a ground soldier, a sailor on the seas, a marine hitting the enemy shores, or a nurse tending to the wounded, it is recognized that this great generation accomplished a tremendous undertaking that should never be forgotten, and recalled with honor, dignity, and pride.
