In 1965 during his term as President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson made an aerial stop at the Cumberland Municipal Airport. He arrived in one of the smaller jet aircraft which were assigned for presidential duties. After arriving at the local airport, the president transferred to a helicopter which transported him to Greenway Avenue Stadium. Following a reception at the unemployment bureau on North Mechanic Street, President Johnson delivered a speech before a crowd of waiting citizens. The speech was well received. After the rather brief visit the president departed.
