Greg Teeter is a truly dedicated aviator, who by his own admission, when not at work for the local gas utility company, eats, sleeps, and dreams of flying and working on his various aircraft projects. This interest began at a young boy when he received his first flight instruction from Jim Abe in 1962. Teeter’s early flight training was in a Piper J-3 Cub rented from John Nash and flown from the Mexico Farms Airport. By 1968 Greg soloed a Nicholson Aviation Piper Colt under the tutelage of Larry Seese. Greg was a Civil Air Patrol Cadet when he obtained his Private Pilot license at age 17.
While employed by Nicholson Air Service as a line boy, Greg took advantage of every opportunity to fly on aerial charter freight trips, usually in a twin-engine Piper Aztec or Navajo aircraft. After graduation from Flintstone High School, he gained further aviation experience while working at Alphin Aircraft in Hagerstown. While there he gained his Aircraft and Powerplant Mechanics Rating in 1970. He was then employed as a mechanic for local automotive dealers and continued to perform aircraft maintenance. This led to Greg obtaining his coveted Aircraft Inspectors designation from the Federal Aviation Administration. During the 1970’s, Teeter built a Stitts Playboy, restored a Taylorcraft, and a small but very fast Cassutt Formula One Racer. He joined the local Chapter 426 of the Experimental Aviation Association and has served as a dedicated officer of that organization for many years. Greg has restored an Ercoupe, a Brieglieb BG-12 sailplane, and a VariEze. Always having several aviation projects at hand, Greg is currently building a Smith Miniplane. He estimates that in the course of his Mechanics Rating and Aircraft Inspector capabilities, he has re-licensed over 500 aircraft and has made the first flight test for four different types of homebuilt aircraft. Greg, as an eager supporter of the EAA’s Young Eagles program, has flown over 130 youngsters in that highly successful EAA project designed to entice youngsters into the field of aviation. He has never forgotten his difficulty in earning money to finance his passion for flight. Greg is enthusiastically drawn to numerous aircraft projects and is willingly available to help other aviators who can gain from his background and experience.
Greg Teeter and his wife, Willie, acquired a Piper J-3 Cub from Buck Knots in 1991. That old yellow Cub, built in the 1940’s, has become Willie’s pride and joy. Willie Braun Teeter is an accomplished aviator in her own right. Trained by local flight instructor David Summerfield, she quickly grasped the techniques and expertise of aviating. Summerfield relates that he considers Willie to be one the best students he has ever had the privilege of training. Greg and Willie Teeter were married on July 24, 1992 in one of the most unique ceremonies ever witnessed. That wedding ceremony is detailed in Chapter IX. Willie and Greg have developed their own private grass airstrip by their home near Flintstone, appropriately named the ‘Flying Hill Aerodrome’. They base the Piper J-3 Cub there. If Greg is not airborne in the Cub, Willie will probably be aloft participating in the joy of flight.
