THE 1990’S

The visitations of the Collings Foundation’s beautifully restored World War II bombers to the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport were highlights of this period.  The B-17 and B-24, both in excellent flying condition, became popular attractions for not only war veterans but numerous interested observers, both young and old.

The quickly changing methods of aerial navigation have had a major impact on all types of flying as old aviators adapted and new aviators found the more exotic methods making cross country flight much easier.

Cumberland has been served by three airport terminals as the regional airfield has served as the focal point of aerial transportation for our community.   The recap of those terminals and their use is described.

A nostalgic tale is told of a journey to Oshkosh by a group of related aviators.  The celebration of a past air mail event from Keyser to Cumberland in long ago days was accomplished in a 1927 aircraft.

Dave Summerfield, an experienced local aviator, received a life saving award from the Civil Air Patrol for his grand effort in assisting a couple who were placed in a highly precarious position.

Certainly one of the most unique wedding ceremonies ever witnessed was the joining of Greg Teeter and Willie Braun at the old Mexico Farms Airfield.

With the building of a new modern air terminal to serve Cumberland’s needs, a visitor’s gallery was added to the upper level for the pleasure of the traveling public as well as our local residents.  The ‘Cohongaronta’ Gallery reflects on the heritage and history of the Cumberland area.  It has been become an engaging and pleasant site for all.
